WHAT IS BOTOX ® COSMETIC?

Derived from sources that exist in nature

BOTOX® Cosmetic contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Formulations, potency, and approved doses vary among botulinum toxin products, which means that one product cannot take the place of another. Those are a few reasons why there is no such thing as a “generic” form of BOTOX® Cosmetic. There have been no studies to support that other products are Unit-to-Unit equivalent to BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Botox and fillers are available for temporary wrinkle management and volume augmentation. I’ve used Botox for cosmetic and functional purposes for 16 years, and fillers over the last ten, and have come to think of them in a broader context – that of the lifetime of the individual.

Neurotoxins like botulinum are safe and effective when administered correctly, but it is important to be conservative. They can be overdone. If a muscle is kept inactive it will atrophy and that will interfere with normal facial expression as well as contribute to a loss of volume, producing a “flatness” of natural contours. It is important that the longer they are used, the less frequently they are given, in order that the muscle have a chance to recover. I do not believe in “preventive Botox”.

For fillers, “ There are a variety of fillers available today and each has features that lend themselves better to some situations better than others and some areas of the face better than others. I prefer using thin blunt cannulas to inject the face and always use cannulas around the eyes to reduce the chances of complications both uncommon and rare.

In my view, autologous fat transfer is the ideal permanent filler.”
